DIGITAL 16

16mm film projection with digital sound

AVCOM are delighted to introduce a new product specifically for educational institutions and specialist cinema venues.

The Digital16 system permits student and low-budget filmmakers to re-introduce the Standard- and Super-16mm print format for projection, with full-range multi-channel digital audio hitherto only available to filmmakers working on bigger productions.

The DAT-based format is very cost-effective and easy to use, and has been developed in response to requests from filmmakers.

AVCOM has used its unique expertise in motion picture audio-visual presentation, as well as its strong history of servicing educational institutions and specialist venues, to bring this innovation to practical fruition.

Digital16 allows full Dolby ® mixes to be reproduced from the DAT carrier, synchronised to the projector using time code. Modification of professional 16mm projectors is straightforward, and the system can easily be installed into existing sound racks. As mentioned, use of Dolby ® decoding products is strongly recommended to make full use of the system's capabilities. A major bonus is that many potential customers will have access to, and be familiar with, DAT reproducing equipment.

Digital16 has been specifically developed to be backward-compatible and requires no special laboratory or dubbing theatre processes. The traditional optical track can be retained on Standard-16mm prints if desired, and synchronous sound reproduction with Super-16mm prints is also made possible.

Uniquely, Digital16 fits easily into conventional digital post-production workflows and gives filmmakers back the possibility of projecting their work on film where they feel it suits their project. It provides a very high quality audio system to match the excellent picture quality of 16mm that has long been available through advances in camera and lens design, and improved film emulsions.
